Cebo Holland & Cebo UK successfully deliver deep groundwater well
Cebo Holland, in close collaboration with Cebo UK, successfully completed a deep drilling project at a site in West Sussex (UK), commissioned by Nicholls Boreholes Ltd.
After previous shallow wells on the site delivered disappointing yields, the decision was made to pursue a deeper aquifer with little known geological information and yield. The outcome: a newly developed borehole producing clear groundwater at a depth of 320 metres — and a satisfied client.
From low yields to clear results
Previous boreholes at the site delivered only around 1 m³ of water per day, significantly below the expected 20 m³/day. To secure a more reliable source, Nicholls Boreholes Ltd. reached out to Cebo . A detailed drilling plan was collaboratively developed targeting deeper formations, in particular the Lower Tunbridge Wells Formation, with permission granted to drill up to 400 metres deep. The target was clear: to access a sustainable and productive aquifer.
Expertise in fluid design and execution
The drilling fluids were prepared and supervised by Frank Ooms (Cebo Holland) and Tyler Brown (Cebo UK). A tailored drilling fluid program was created, taking into account the complex geology of the site — including clay, sandstone, and siltstone layers. The carefully designed fluid system included Soda Ash, BARO-GEL (bentonite), EZ-MUD GOLD (polymer), and PENETROL DRY (surfactant), ensuring optimal performance throughout the drilling process. Real-time monitoring and adjustment of fluid properties — including viscosity, density, and filtration — were carried out using Marsh Funnel, Mud Balance and Filter Press testing equipment. The system was kept within the desired specifications to ensure borehole stability and minimal formation damage, even when drilling through more sensitive zones.
Clean water and client satisfaction
At a final depth of 320 metres, the drilling team reached the target aquifer in the Tunbridge Wells Formation, and the borehole was successfully developed. The confirmation came quickly and clearly: “We have clear water,” as reported by the client after testing. This result was not only a technical success, but also a catalyst for further collaboration — Nicholls Boreholes has since registered for Cebo’s Mud School, eager to deepen their understanding of drilling fluids and well development techniques.
