Emergency Response Exercise with Brandweer Kennemerland at CEBO

This week, CEBO’s Emergency Response Team (BHV) carried out a valuable safety exercise together with the local fire department Brandweer Kennemerland at the industrial site in IJmuiden.

During the training, a realistic scenario was simulated in which a gas cylinder was struck by a forklift. The (inert) cylinder was damaged and began to leak. At the same time, one person was trapped underneath the forklift and other employees were present in the area. A complex situation requiring fast decision-making and strong cooperation.

The exercise took place in the workshop, an area where gas cylinders are used daily, for example during welding and cutting operations. The emergency responders had to quickly assess the risks and act accordingly. The key focus points included:

  • raising the alarm

  • acting safely

  • evacuating when necessary

  • awaiting the arrival of emergency services

  • providing clear and accurate information

Because it was not immediately clear what type of gas was involved, the team decided not to enter the area for their own safety. Doors were opened for ventilation where this could be done safely.

An important learning point was also the reception of the emergency services at the main entrance, ensuring they could be guided quickly to the scene and fully briefed on the situation.

After the exercise, a joint debriefing was held with Mark Boot from the regional safety authority. This also provided valuable insight into the procedures of the fire and rescue team, such as conducting an LEL measurement, entering the workshop with breathing apparatus and freeing a victim (dummy) using heavy rescue equipment.

For both CEBO and Brandweer Kennemerland, this was a highly valuable exercise and certainly worth repeating. Safety remains the number one priority at all times.
